Analyzing a traditional game and a religious ritual formed through the influence of suffering in the Afghanistan geography, the “Burqa – Buzkashi” captures the instances of daily life in Afghanistan visited by the artists multiple times.
Starting with the “chador”, continuing with the “burqa”, and perhaps ending with the cerecloth, Islamic ideologies create a process that sentences the woman to be covered, hidden, and unseen; a process that transforms the woman into “nothing”. Photos of women forced into being forgotten showcase an aesthetic imagery of the “nothingness”.
In history, buzkashi is a traditional game played by nomadic warriors where Afghan men display their warrior identities through the struggle. With no hope for tomorrow, and with the only intention of salvaging the day, for people living with war and its effects alongside tanks, barbwires, and suicide bombers for the last 35 years, this game is an activity of self-expression in which they find their life force.
With a narrative incorporating contradictory stasis and dynamism, and by expressing the aesthetics of nothingness and struggle as a whole, “Burka – Buzkashi” displays the anachronic people of this geography through processing the traditional symbol of “burka” and the “buzkashi” game rooted in the nomadic warrior culture of the past.
