Giuseppe De Mattia

Born in Bari, 24th April 1980.
After studying Urban Panning from 1999 to 2001 at the Polytechnic of Milan, Giuseppe De Mattia completes his BA in D.A.M.S Cinema, department of Italian Studies and Philosophy in Bologna.
From 2006 to 2009 he lives in Lisbon where he works in filmmaking and collaborating with the production company Contracosta in the production of two movies: “No Quarto da Vanda” and “Joventude em Marcha!” by portuguese director Pedro Costa.
In 2008, always in Lisbon, he meets artist Marina Ballo Charmet who is working on her photographic project “Il Parco” (The Park). He will be her assistant during work on Lisbon parks and later in Stockholm and Bologna.
This encounter is pivotal in the development of De Mattia as a visual artist.
In September 2009 he is invited to be part of the “Anamnesis Belgium – encounter for cinema, sound&oral tradition” artist-in-residence programme.
During the last years he has collaborated on a regular basis with the Photo Archive of the Cineteca of Bologna (Bologna Film Institute), with Home Movies – National Archive of Family Films.
Recently he is mainly active on the national territory with numerous group exhibitions, he was introduced into the Young European Photography section (2013), he won the jury prize at the 2013 Festival Robot with Fake Samoa project.
He released two solo exhibitions with the works “Strada Maggiore 49” and “Island within an island”.

He lives between Bari, Mantova and Bologna.
He is represented by Nowhere gallery, Milan.

Work method
In 2008 De Mattia starts an artistic development that is highly influenced by documentary and goes for a research method that draws on anthropological or archaeological investigation.
When snapping, he often makes use of microphones and recorders to capture the environment’s sounds. He also takes notes, doodles and collects objects from the site he is photographing.
The journey itself is often the core of the project that therefore naturally translates into a logic that is closer to Land-Art.
